Rooftop Bars in Penang: Choose George Town or the Kelawai Side

Illustrative night view of a historic George Town street in Penang with traffic and illuminated buildings.

Penang does not require a long rooftop crawl to deliver a memorable evening above the city. The more useful decision is where you want the night to unfold: near the Kelawai and Gurney side of town, or in central George Town.

For most visitors, that choice narrows the search to two credible hotel rooftops with different rhythms. Gravity suits a sunset-led night that can stretch into music and later drinks. DSRT Sky Room works better as a quieter high-level pause in the middle of a George Town evening. Neither is automatically the “best” rooftop bar in Penang; the right one depends on your base, your pace and what you plan to do before and after.

Penang’s rooftop choice is really two different evenings

The venues sit in different parts of the city and make sense for different itineraries. Choosing by location first prevents a simple drink from turning into an unnecessary cross-town journey.

Gravity: build the night around sunset and energy

Gravity Rooftop Bar is at G Hotel Kelawai, close to the Gurney side of Penang. The official G Hotel page describes a rooftop built around panoramic city views, signature drinks, sunset and live music. It currently lists opening from 5pm, with a later close on Friday, Saturday, public-holiday eves and public holidays.

That makes Gravity the more natural choice when the rooftop is the main event. Arrive while daylight remains, allow time for the view to change, and avoid packing dinner, drinks and another distant stop into the same narrow window. The hotel also publishes a dining and beverage offer, so this can be more than a quick pre-dinner drink, although menus and promotions should be checked directly before visiting.

DSRT Sky Room: keep the evening centred on George Town

DSRT Sky Room is at St Giles Wembley on Jalan Magazine, making it the more convenient option when your evening is already focused on central George Town. The official St Giles page presents it as a sunset-facing hotel bar for wine, whisky, champagne and snacks.

The current hotel listing gives a 5pm to midnight service window from Monday to Saturday and marks Sunday as closed. That schedule makes DSRT especially useful as a deliberate pause: a sunset drink before dinner, or a final elevated stop after exploring central George Town. It is a less obvious fit for a spontaneous Sunday plan, so checking the hotel’s live information matters.

A quick comparison before you book

Decision Gravity DSRT Sky Room
Best geographic fit Kelawai and the Gurney side Central George Town
Natural pace Sunset into a longer, livelier evening A focused drink before or after another city plan
Officially highlighted offer Signature drinks, city views and live music Wine, whisky, champagne and snacks
Timing note Later official closing on selected weekend and holiday nights Official page currently lists Sunday as closed

This is not a ranking. Gravity’s stronger weekend energy may be exactly what one traveller wants and more than another needs. DSRT’s central location may simplify a George Town itinerary, while adding little value if you are already staying near Kelawai.

Two simple ways to plan the evening

The Kelawai-side sunset plan

Keep the afternoon light. Leave enough time to return to your hotel, change if needed and reach Gravity before sunset without rushing. Once there, treat the view, drinks and music as one continuous experience rather than the first item on an ambitious bar crawl.

This plan works best for travellers already staying around Kelawai or Gurney, and for groups who want the rooftop to carry most of the evening. If food is important, inspect the current menu before reserving instead of assuming the rooftop offer will match a full dinner.

The central George Town pause

Build the day at street level, return for a short reset, then use DSRT as a transition into the evening. A pre-dinner visit keeps the rooftop concise; a later stop lets you end the night with a city view without moving far from central George Town.

This approach is particularly sensible when the rooftop is one part of a broader city itinerary. It also gives you a cleaner fallback if weather changes: keep the rest of the night nearby rather than depending on a long transfer between districts.

What to confirm on the day

Rooftop information changes faster than the view. A short confirmation with the hotel can prevent most avoidable problems.

  • Opening hours: recheck the official venue page, especially on Sundays, public holidays and holiday eves.
  • Live music or events: ask whether the date has a performance, private function or altered access.
  • Seating: request the type of table you prefer, but do not assume that a reservation guarantees the outer edge or a particular view.
  • Weather: ask how the venue handles rain and whether a sheltered alternative is available.
  • Food: review the current menu if the rooftop must replace dinner rather than simply provide drinks and snacks.
  • Transport: plan the journey back before ordering the final round, particularly if your hotel is in the other part of town.

So, which rooftop bar in Penang should you choose?

Choose Gravity when you are based near Kelawai or Gurney, want sunset to lead into a more energetic night, and prefer the rooftop to be the main destination. Choose DSRT Sky Room when central George Town is already the centre of your plans and you want an elevated drink to frame the evening rather than dominate it.

The simplest rule is also the most useful: pick the rooftop that fits the geography of your night. Penang rewards unhurried evenings, and the better view is the one you reach with enough time to enjoy it.
